President Droupadi Murmu welcomed Cyprus President Nikos Christodoulides at Rashtrapati Bhavan in New Delhi and organized a banquet in his honor. President Murmu highlighted that the elevation of India–Cyprus relations to a Strategic Partnership signifies the longstanding trust between the two nations and paves the way for enhanced cooperation opportunities. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Cyprus President Christodoulides engaged in bilateral discussions at Hyderabad House, where PM Modi announced the elevation of ties between India and Cyprus to a strategic partnership.
The visit of Cyprus President Christodoulides to India was described by PM Modi as a significant milestone in the shared journey of the two countries. Christodoulides emphasized on social media that the meeting signifies the establishment of a partnership with strategic depth and global significance, emphasizing trust, dialogue, and cooperation as the way forward for both nations. During a joint press briefing, PM Modi highlighted Cyprus as one of India’s top 10 investors, with investments from Cyprus in India nearly doubling over the last decade. The elevation of the trusted partnership to a strategic level aims to further enhance bilateral cooperation and double investments in the next five years.
The outcomes of the meeting included the elevation of ties to a strategic partnership and the signing of various agreements, such as establishing a Joint Working Group on Counter-Terrorism and collaborations in diplomatic training between institutions like the Sushma Swaraj Institute of Foreign Service (SSIFS) and the Diplomatic Academy of Cyprus’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Additionally, agreements were reached in the areas of higher education and research to strengthen the partnership between India and Cyprus.
