Prime Minister Narendra Modi highlighted the ongoing significance of coal in India’s energy landscape, affirming its role in the country’s development vision for ‘Viksit Bharat at 2047’. He shared insights from Union Coal and Mines Minister G. Kishan Reddy on the sector’s evolution towards a more advanced fuel source over the past 11 years.
India achieved its highest-ever coal production in the fiscal year 2024-25, reaching 1,047.523 million tonnes, showcasing a growth of nearly 5% from the previous year. The supply of coal also saw an increase, rising to 1,025.33 million tonnes in the same period, marking a growth of about 5.38%.
The country’s coal production has seen a substantial rise, climbing from 565.77 million tonnes in FY 2013-14 to 1,047.52 million tonnes in FY 2024-25. Coal remains a vital component in India’s energy mix, contributing over 55% to the nation’s primary commercial energy and playing a crucial role in power generation.
