Prime Minister Narendra Modi commended the launch of a ship, INSV Kaundinya, using the ancient Indian stitched-ship technique, setting sail from Porbandar to Muscat, Oman. The vessel symbolizes India’s rich maritime heritage, with PM Modi acknowledging the efforts of designers, artisans, shipbuilders, and the Indian Navy in its creation.
INSV Kaundinya, named after the legendary mariner Kaundinya, aims to retrace historic maritime routes connecting India with the Indian Ocean world. Constructed using traditional stitched-plank methods and coconut coir rope, the ship reflects India’s historical prowess in maritime navigation to regions like West Asia, Africa, and Southeast Asia.
The project, a collaboration between the Ministry of Culture and the Navy, signifies India’s commitment to reviving indigenous knowledge systems. INSV Kaundinya, a fully seaworthy vessel, was formally inducted by the Indian Navy on May 21, celebrating India’s rich shipbuilding legacy and showcasing a blend of history, craftsmanship, and modern naval expertise.
