The Punjab government has assured the Delhi Assembly of an upcoming formal response from its Home Affairs department regarding the controversy surrounding Leader of Opposition Atishi’s comments on Sikh Gurus. This response, currently being finalized, will incorporate the input of Punjab’s top law enforcement and forensic authorities for a conclusive stance on the issue. The ruling BJP in Delhi criticized Atishi’s remarks as disrespectful towards Sikh Gurus, leading to an FIR by the Punjab Police over a related video clip.
In a recent update to the Delhi Assembly, the Punjab government’s Home Affairs department provided a formal clarification on the ongoing investigation into Atishi’s alleged remarks. Following a request from the Delhi Legislative Assembly Secretariat on February 5, seeking written comments from Punjab on a breach of privilege and contempt matter, the Punjab Additional Chief Secretary’s office responded.
Prior to the February 5 correspondence, the Department of Home Affairs had not directly received any communication from the Delhi Legislative Assembly Secretariat on this specific case, as confirmed by the Punjab Additional Chief Secretary’s office. Formal comments addressing the issues raised by the Delhi Assembly’s Secretariat had already been sent to the legislature by the Director General of Police (DGP) Punjab, the Commissioner of Police, Jalandhar, and the Director of the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) Punjab.
On February 4, Delhi Assembly Speaker Vijender Gupta referred the Punjab Police’s actions in the Atishi video controversy to the House Committee of Privileges for a thorough investigation, citing a potential breach of privilege and contempt of the House. The Privileges Committee will examine the roles of the Punjab Director General of Police and the Jalandhar Police Commissioner based on a complaint filed by Delhi Cabinet Minister Kapil Mishra.
The issue revolves around an FIR filed by the Punjab Police, following a complaint by Iqbal Singh, over an allegedly edited video clip of Atishi’s statements in the Delhi Assembly on January 6, 2026. After reviewing the Punjab Police’s response and Mishra’s complaint, the Speaker determined that the matter directly relates to the House’s proceedings, falling under legislative privilege.
