Punjab Police’s Counter Intelligence Wing, along with Chandigarh Police and Haryana Police, have apprehended the two main culprits responsible for throwing a hand grenade outside the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) office in Chandigarh. The arrested individuals, Gurtej Singh and Amanpreet Singh, hail from Rattangarh in Ropar and were captured in Rewari, Haryana. Amanpreet Singh, one of the accused, has a criminal history with theft and snatching cases against him in Mohali and Bilaspur, Himachal Pradesh.
The arrests occurred following the capture of five other suspects – Balwinder Lal, Jasvir Singh, Charanjit Singh, Rubal Chauhan, and Mandeep – involved in the same incident. Additionally, a hand grenade and a .30 bore Zigana pistol were seized from their possession. Director General of Police (DGP) Punjab Gaurav Yadav mentioned that all seven individuals linked to the case are now in police custody. The perpetrators were allegedly incited and guided by ISI-backed foreign handlers, Baljot Singh alias Jot in Portugal and Harjeet Singh Laadi in Germany, who promised them a monetary reward of Rs 2 lakh for executing the attack.
According to DGP Yadav, the accused meticulously followed the instructions of their foreign handlers, utilizing various intermediaries to carry out the assault. Gurtej Singh, one of the arrested individuals, revealed during initial questioning that he established contact with a foreign handler through social media approximately six months ago. Following the handler’s directives, Gurtej, along with accomplices Rubal Chauhan and Mandeep, procured the weapons from Jasvir in Bharapur village in SBS Nagar on March 28. Gurtej then enlisted Amanpreet Singh to carry out the attack, which took place on April 1, where Amanpreet hurled the grenade while Gurtej recorded the act on his mobile phone as instructed before both fleeing the scene.
