Punjab Police have dismantled a cross-border illegal arms network connected to Pakistani smugglers. Two operatives, Gurpreet Singh alias Gopi (22) and Surjit Singh (35), were apprehended, and six sophisticated pistols, including two 9MM Glock pistols and four .30 bore pistols, along with two cartridges, were seized from them. The arrested individuals were reportedly engaged in illegal arms trafficking, supplying weapons to criminals at the behest of their handlers based in foreign countries.
Director General of Police (DGP) Punjab Gaurav Yadav stated that investigations are ongoing to uncover the full extent of the network and its connections. Commissioner of Police (Amritsar) Gurpreet Singh Bhullar disclosed that the suspects were in direct communication with Pakistani smugglers through social media platforms, receiving illegal arms shipments via drones for distribution to criminal elements. Following leads on illegal weapons movement, the police apprehended Gurpreet Singh, leading to the recovery of additional firearms and ammunition.
The operation, which led to the arrests and recovery of illicit weapons, was initiated based on intelligence regarding the movement of illegal arms. The police are working to trace the entire supply chain and distribution network of illegal arms, aiming to disrupt the flow of weapons into the hands of criminals. An FIR was lodged on January 13 under relevant sections of the Arms Act at the Police Station Islamabad in Amritsar.
