Pyongyang unveiled a memorial honoring North Korean soldiers who fought alongside Russia in the Ukraine conflict. Kim Jong-un emphasized the importance of strengthening ties between Pyongyang and Moscow during the opening ceremony. The Memorial Museum of Combat Feats was inaugurated in Pyongyang to commemorate the first anniversary of the liberation of the Kursk region from Ukrainian forces.

Key officials from North Korea and Russia attended the ceremony marking Russia’s recapture of the Kursk region from Ukraine on April 26, 2025. Since 2024, North Korea has deployed around 15,000 troops and weapons to support Russia in its conflict with Ukraine. Reports suggest that approximately 6,000 North Korean soldiers were either killed or injured in the prolonged war effort.

During his speech at the ceremony, Kim highlighted the significance of the memorial museum in solidifying the bond between North Korea and Russia. He emphasized the shared commitment of the two nations, forged through their joint efforts. Kim stressed the need for a strong alliance to confront crises and challenges together.

North Korea and Russia have been enhancing their military collaboration following a mutual defense treaty signed by Kim and Russian President Vladimir Putin in June 2024. Putin conveyed his belief that the memorial would serve as a symbol of friendship between the two countries. The Russian President expressed confidence in strengthening the strategic partnership between Russia and the DPRK.
