Odommo Jobian Oikko, supported by Jamaat-e-Islami’s student wing Islami Chhatra Shibir, has clinched a major victory in the Jagannath University Central Students Union (JnUCSU) elections in Bangladesh. They secured 16 out of 21 positions, including Vice-President, General Secretary, and Assistant General Secretary roles. In contrast, the ‘Oikkoboddho Nirbhik Jobian’ panel, backed by BNP Chhatra Dal and Gono Odhikar Parishad, only managed to win five positions.
The election results were officially declared by JnUCSU Chief Election Commissioner Mostafa Hasan in the early hours of Thursday, as reported by Bengali daily Prothom Alo. Riazul Islam from the ‘Odommo Jobian Oikko’ panel emerged victorious as the Vice-President with 5,558 votes, defeating AKM Rakib from the ‘Oikkoboddho Nirbhik Jobian’ panel. Abdul Alim Arif secured the General Secretary post, and Masud Rana won the Assistant General Secretary position.
Islami Chhatra Shibir-backed candidates have been successful in various university elections in Bangladesh, including Dhaka University, Jahangirnagar University, Rajshahi University, and Chittagong University. They also dominated the recent JnUCSU election. However, concerns have been raised regarding alleged electoral irregularities and the potential impact of Jamaat-backed candidates winning student body elections.
