Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, and Mallikarjun Kharge, the National President of Congress, paid tribute to Bhagat Singh, Sukhdev, and Rajguru on the anniversary of their martyrdom. These iconic Indian revolutionaries were executed on March 23, 1931, in Lahore jail, fueling the freedom struggle. March 23 is now commemorated as Shaheedi Diwas.
Gandhi expressed his reverence for the heroes, stating, “Their fearless struggle and supreme sacrifice in fighting for the nation are an inspiration for every Indian.” He added, “Salutations to the brave sons of Mother India. Inquilab Zindabad!”
Kharge also honored the revolutionaries on social media, acknowledging their courage, sacrifice, and dedication. He emphasized that the nation will forever be indebted to their sacrifice. Congress Wayanad MP Priyanka Gandhi also paid her respects to the martyrs, highlighting their lifelong struggle for India’s freedom from inequality and exploitation.
The Hindustan Socialist Republican Association members, including Bhagat Singh, Rajguru, and Sukhdev, sought retribution for Lala Lajpat Rai’s death by targeting a British officer, leading to the Saunders shooting in 1928. Subsequently, they were arrested, sentenced to death, and believed that their sacrifice would spark a revolutionary movement against colonial rule.
