Congress leader Rahul Gandhi criticized the ruling Left Democratic Front in Kerala, accusing them of forming an unexpected alliance with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). He emphasized the upcoming Assembly election as a clash of ideologies. Gandhi, campaigning for the United Democratic Front (UDF) in Kannur, highlighted a breakfast meeting with local leaders followed by a rally attended by district candidates.
The event in Kannur saw the presence of former CPI(M) leaders T.K. Govindan and V. Kunjikrishnan, now UDF-backed candidates, which Gandhi viewed as a significant shift within the Left. He described the election as a battle between the Left and the UDF but pointed out a unique collaboration between the Left and the BJP, terming it a puzzling development given their historical differences.
Gandhi criticized the Left for allegedly deviating from its fundamental principles and showing a preference for corporate interests over the welfare of the people. He raised concerns about the Left’s changing stance and highlighted what he referred to as “clues” supporting his claims. The Congress leader also criticized the Centre’s economic and foreign policies, warning about potential negative impacts on Indian farmers and small businesses.
Highlighting the election as a choice between values, Gandhi emphasized Kerala’s historical commitment to unity, non-violence, and inclusivity. He contrasted the UDF’s message of unity and brotherhood with what he perceives as a divisive approach by the Left-BJP partnership. Gandhi is set to continue his campaign in Nadapuram, Kozhikode district, with two more rallies.
