Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, addressed a large gathering of the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) in Kochi, praising the nearly 7,800 Congress representatives who won in the December 2025 local body elections. This event marked the UDF’s significant post-election mobilization, showcasing their confidence before the upcoming Assembly elections.
Rahul Gandhi hailed the election results as a remarkable triumph and stressed the importance of protecting the Constitution alongside bolstering grassroots democracy. He highlighted the Congress’s role in empowering local self-governments through the 73rd and 74th Constitutional Amendments, contrasting it with the BJP-RSS’s centralization approach.
In his speech, Rahul Gandhi criticized the ruling party for favoring compliance over participation and accused them of fostering a “culture of silence” to concentrate power and wealth among a select few corporate entities. He referenced a conversation with writer Dr. M. Leelavathy, emphasizing the need to prevent the spread of silence in India.
The Congress leader expressed confidence in the UDF’s victory in both the local body and Assembly elections, but stressed the importance of addressing Kerala’s pressing issues, particularly unemployment. He emphasized the need for a clear, people-centric vision once in power and highlighted the importance of listening to the public and maintaining accessibility.
During a Q&A session, Rahul Gandhi assured the audience that a Congress-led UDF government would prioritize listening to the people and being approachable. He defended the MGNREGA program, designed to ensure minimum wages and dignified work, criticizing the current government for attacking it due to their opposition to decentralized implementation.
Rahul Gandhi commended Kerala’s political culture, communal harmony, and strong grassroots accountability, urging the newly elected representatives to uphold the people’s trust and defend democracy against any attempts to stifle voices.
