Leader of the Opposition in Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, characterized the upcoming Tamil Nadu Assembly elections as a significant ideological showdown. He highlighted the contest as being between the DMK-led alliance and what he labeled as an AIADMK-BJP coalition aiming to enhance its presence in the state. Gandhi accused the BJP of trying to influence the AIADMK to shape Tamil Nadu’s political landscape.
Gandhi expressed concerns that such attempts could endanger Tamil culture, language, and traditions, which he viewed as integral to the state’s identity. He criticized the AIADMK leadership for allegedly compromising under BJP pressure, aligning with the national party at the expense of regional interests. Drawing parallels with global political dynamics, he warned that external interference in regional parties might weaken democratic institutions and federal principles.
Advocating for self-governance in Tamil Nadu, Gandhi stressed the importance of democratic decision-making by the state’s people through various institutions, including local bodies and the elected Chief Minister. He underscored the significance of decentralization and grassroots involvement in upholding the state’s political values. Gandhi praised former Chief Minister K. Kamaraj for establishing a foundation for inclusive governance and highlighted the DMK-Congress alliance’s commitment to continuing this legacy by ensuring welfare and equal opportunities for all segments of society.
