Senior Congress leader Rahul Gandhi is set to visit Gudalur in the Nilgiris district on January 13 for the golden jubilee celebrations of St Thomas English High School. The visit is ceremonial, with no political events planned during his brief stay in the hill town.
Rahul Gandhi will arrive by helicopter from Mysuru at around 3.30 p.m. and is expected to depart by 4.30 p.m. There will be a formal reception by local Congress leaders at the helipad, but no other engagements are scheduled.
This will be Rahul Gandhi’s second visit to Gudalur in recent years. His last visit was in September 2022 during the Bharat Jodo Yatra, where he stayed overnight at a private school before continuing his journey towards Karnataka.
The golden jubilee celebrations of St Thomas English High School may also see the presence of Rev Dr Mathews Mar Makarios Episcopa, Metropolitan of the Malankara Mar Thoma Syrian Church, adding significance to the event.
Rahul Gandhi’s visit comes amidst political developments in Tamil Nadu, with the DMK-Congress alliance facing internal discussions over power-sharing. The Congress has been critical of the BJP over the recent censorship issue related to Vijay’s film ‘Jana Nayagan’, which has stirred political reactions in the state.
Meanwhile, the Congress high command is gearing up for a crucial meeting in New Delhi to assess the party’s election readiness in Tamil Nadu. Mallikarjun Kharge and Rahul Gandhi are expected to meet with TNCC leaders, former TNCC presidents, and state representatives on January 18 to strategize ahead of the upcoming elections.
