Rajya Sabha Chairman, C.P. Radhakrishnan, oversaw the swearing-in of several newly elected members on the first day of the Monsoon Session. These members, representing various political parties, officially became part of the Rajya Sabha following recent biennial elections. Notable individuals who took the oath include Congress leader Pawan Khera, Sushmita Dev, Sukhendu Sekhar Roy, and Prakash Chik Baraik from West Bengal.

Mahesh Kevat from Madhya Pradesh, Dr. Mukesh bhai from Gujarat, and Dr. Satish Poonia from Rajasthan also took their oaths under the guidance of the Vice-President. Subsequently, the new members assumed their roles to engage in the House’s activities. Congress spokesperson Pawan Khera, a key figure representing the party’s views on national matters, entered the Upper House after winning from Karnataka.

Among the newly sworn-in members were Sushmita Dev, Sukhendu Sekhar Roy, and Prakash Chik Baraik, who transitioned from the Trinamool Congress to the BJP. Their induction as BJP MPs not only strengthens the ruling party in the Upper House but also signifies its growing influence in Eastern India. Khiangte Laltluangkima from Mizoram and James Pagsang of the National People’s Party (NPP) from Meghalaya also took their oaths as Rajya Sabha members.

The Chairman and fellow members welcomed the new MPs, extending their best wishes for their parliamentary journey. However, a tense moment arose during the oath-taking of Sushmita Dev and Mahesh Kevat, as Opposition members resorted to slogans while they were being sworn in. Despite the disruption, they completed their oaths amidst the commotion. The ceremony, attended by senior Rajya Sabha Secretariat officials and dignitaries, proceeded smoothly.

Several other elected members had already taken their oaths before the commencement of the Monsoon Session.
