The Rajya Sabha initiated discussions on the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation (Amendment) Bill, 2026, designating Amaravati as the permanent capital of Andhra Pradesh. Minister of State for Home Affairs Nityananda Rai introduced the bill, which was passed amidst opposition protests. Union Minister of Civil Aviation Kinjarapu Rammohan Naidu criticized the opposition for their inconsistent stance on the capital issue, emphasizing the importance of responsible governance.

The debate highlighted the confusion surrounding Andhra Pradesh’s capital, with Naidu questioning the previous government’s decision-making. He commended the NDA government for its support in developing Amaravati and acknowledged the efforts of the state’s farmers and women in securing the capital’s status. Congress MP Renuka Chowdhury expressed disappointment over the prolonged delay in resolving the capital issue, calling it a matter of national shame.

Chowdhury welcomed the bill, noting that it signifies the government’s official declaration of Amaravati as the capital after years of uncertainty. The legislation seeks to amend the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act, 2014, solidifying Amaravati as the sole capital and preventing future changes. Passed by the Lok Sabha with bipartisan support, the bill aims to provide stability and clarity for the region’s development, fulfilling the aspirations of Andhra Pradesh’s residents, especially the farming community.
