Former Indian all-rounder Ravichandran Ashwin realized it was time to retire from Test cricket when he was replaced by Washington Sundar during India’s tour of Australia in 2024. Ashwin, acknowledging his diminishing role, made the decision to retire after losing his spot in the XI.
Speaking at an event in Kolkata, Ashwin recalled the pivotal moment at Perth where he recognized the end of his tenure with the Indian team. Despite facing criticism for his retirement post the Brisbane Test, Ashwin supported head coach Gautam Gambhir’s team-centric approach over individual preferences.
Ashwin emphasized the team-oriented culture in the Indian dressing room, stressing the significance of collective efforts beyond individual brilliance. He praised the camaraderie shared with Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, highlighting their united goal of achieving success for India without blaming each other.
Having amassed over 500 Test wickets, Ashwin expressed concerns about the challenges confronting the Indian Test team during the ongoing transition phase. While acknowledging the batting prowess, he pointed out the need for improved bowling effectiveness to address the team’s current concerns.
