Real Madrid has officially announced Jose Mourinho as their new first-team coach, marking his return to the club after 13 years. The 63-year-old Portuguese coach will lead the team for the next three seasons, with his contract extending until June 30, 2029. Mourinho is set to join Real Madrid on July 13, coinciding with the start of the preseason.
Mourinho’s move to Real Madrid involves a 15 million euro compensation payment to Benfica, his former club, where he recently completed a successful spell. Real Madrid President Florentino Perez had assured Mourinho of the coaching role if he won the club’s recent presidential election, which he did with a significant majority.
During his previous tenure at Real Madrid, Mourinho achieved notable success, including winning La Liga, Copa del Rey, and the Spanish Super Cup. His return to the club comes after a successful stint at Benfica, where he led the team to an unbeaten league campaign but secured a third-place finish.
The appointment of Mourinho at Real Madrid follows his departure from Benfica, with the Portuguese club swiftly naming Marco Silva as his replacement. Mourinho’s upcoming tasks include working with the Real Madrid squad, with his coaching duties commencing this Saturday.
