The Regional Meteorological Centre in Chennai has predicted widespread rainfall, thunderstorms, and strong winds in various parts of Tamil Nadu as the southwest monsoon progresses over southern India. An upper-air cyclonic circulation persists over coastal Karnataka and nearby regions at an altitude of 3.1 km to 4.5 km above mean sea level. The southwest monsoon has advanced into different areas, including the Arabian Sea, Lakshadweep, Kerala, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, and the Bay of Bengal.
Light to moderate rain accompanied by thunderstorms is expected in isolated places across Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal. Heavy rain, thunderstorms, and gusty winds reaching 40-50 kmph are likely in hilly regions like Coimbatore district, Nilgiris, Theni, and Dindigul districts. Similar weather conditions are anticipated in districts such as Tenkasi, Tirunelveli, Kanyakumari, Erode, Salem, and others, with isolated heavy rainfall and strong winds.
For June 7, the RMC predicts light to moderate rain with thunderstorms in Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal. Heavy rainfall is expected in areas like Nilgiris, Tiruppur, Dindigul, Theni, Kanyakumari, and the hilly regions of Coimbatore district. Thunderstorms with gusty winds are also likely in districts including Tenkasi, Tirunelveli, Erode, Salem, Dharmapuri, and more.
In Chennai, the sky is forecasted to be partly cloudy with chances of light to moderate rain and thunderstorms in some parts of the city. The maximum temperature may reach around 38-39 degrees Celsius, while the minimum temperature could be between 29-30 degrees Celsius. The weather department has issued a warning for fishermen and maritime activities due to strong winds expected along the Tamil Nadu coast, Gulf of Mannar, and Comorin Sea.
