Rescuers are working diligently to free around 18 individuals stuck under the debris of a collapsed warehouse in Kolkata’s Taratala area. The collapse, which occurred on Wednesday afternoon, led to a swift response from various disaster management teams, including the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), Kolkata Police, and the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF). Despite successfully rescuing 21 workers, unfortunately, three lost their lives, and the rest are receiving medical care.
West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari, accompanied by ministers from his Cabinet, visited the site to oversee the operations. The collaborative efforts of multiple agencies, including the Army, NDRF, SDRF, and Kolkata Police, are focused on rescuing the remaining trapped individuals. The Army has mobilized specialized teams for search and rescue operations, emphasizing a coordinated approach with other response units to locate and extract those believed to be under the rubble.
The collapse, which trapped an estimated 18 people, occurred during the construction of a godown on land owned by Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port, Kolkata (SMPK). The port authorities have deployed resources such as cranes, gas cutters, ambulances, and medical teams to aid in the rescue and clearance efforts. The warehouse project, being developed by M/s Behera Brothers on leased SMPK land, was intended for a multi-storey warehouse and cold storage facility under a 30-year agreement.
