Residents of Bakery Gali near Malwa Mill in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, are dealing with a severe drinking water crisis. They have raised concerns about the black, foul-smelling, and insect-infested water being provided through municipal taps, which poses serious health risks, especially for children. Despite attempts to filter and boil the water, residents claim it remains unsafe, leading to frequent illnesses like vomiting, diarrhea, and stomach infections.
One resident expressed the challenges faced, stating, “The water is very dirty initially when the tap is turned on, making it unusable. Although it improves after some time, the tap often stops running quickly, and the water quality remains poor. Residents have reported the presence of red worms in the water, highlighting the lack of action taken to address this issue.”
Another resident emphasized the impact on daily life and children’s health, noting, “Children are falling ill, and basic tasks like washing utensils have become problematic. The contaminated water is causing sickness among children, posing a significant health hazard. Despite the necessity of water for survival, the current supply is deemed unsafe, with inadequate filtration or purification measures in place.”
In response to the widespread water contamination concerns, Additional Commissioners Ashish Pathak and Akash Singh of Indore conducted a survey in Bhagirathpura following reported deaths. The survey aimed to assess public health conditions, ensure the distribution of safe drinking water through tankers, and monitor water usage practices to address the crisis effectively.
Authorities highlighted their efforts to restore safety and public trust amid ongoing demands from Bakery Gali residents for immediate and sustainable solutions to the water problems. The residents noted that the issue is most severe during early morning hours, with persistent water contamination leading to health issues such as vomiting and diarrhea, particularly affecting children.
Some residents shared alarming experiences, mentioning the presence of various worms and small dead animals in the water despite attempts to filter it. The challenges persist, with water quality issues causing disruptions in supply and health concerns among the community.
