The Sabarimala gold theft case has become a focal point in Kerala’s political discussions, especially as the Opposition intensifies its criticism of the ruling LDF and demands accountability. Amid the peak of the April 9 Assembly election campaign, the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) has highlighted the Sabarimala gold scam as a key issue against the ruling Left government.
Leader of the Opposition V.D. Satheesan recently questioned the lack of disciplinary action against CPI-M leaders allegedly linked to the case, emphasizing the seriousness of the accusations. He urged Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and CPI-M state secretary M.V. Govindan to clarify the party’s position and address what he referred to as “continued protection” for the accused.
Satheesan highlighted the denial of bail by both the High Court and the Supreme Court to the accused, underscoring the gravity of the allegations. The case involves the alleged theft of gold ornaments belonging to Lord Ayyappa, with claims that a gatekeeper idol was sold and substituted with a copper replica.
The Opposition leader raised concerns over the inaction in such a significant case, pointing out that the accused, some of whom hold district committee positions, were granted bail due to delays in filing the charge sheet. He questioned the motives behind shielding these individuals and suggested the possibility of political pressure to prevent them from implicating influential figures.
Accusing the government of protecting wrongdoers, Satheesan criticized the Chief Minister for avoiding questions on the matter, despite his regular media appearances during the election period. As the controversy reignites, the Sabarimala gold theft case is expected to remain a contentious issue in Kerala’s political landscape.
