In a significant political development, Sachin Ahir, a Member of the Legislative Council (MLC) from Uddhav Thackeray’s Shiv Sena, has switched allegiance to Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde’s faction within the same party. This move comes amidst the ongoing political maneuvering for the Maharashtra Legislative Council’s Deputy Chairman’s election. Ahir has filed his nomination for this position, marking a swift and unexpected shift in alliances.
Shinde’s successful recruitment of Ahir has caught the Opposition by surprise, as Ahir wasted no time in officially joining Shinde’s camp and contesting for the prestigious post of Deputy Chairman of the Legislative Council. Ahir’s departure is seen as a setback for Thackeray, especially in Mumbai’s Worli Assembly constituency, which holds significance as the stronghold of Aaditya Thackeray.
Having a strong background as a former labor union leader and ex-MLA from Worli, Sachin Ahir commands considerable influence at the grassroots level, thereby reshaping the local political landscape with his move. Ahir, who transitioned from the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) to Shiv Sena in 2019, was later appointed as an MLC in 2022 by the Thackeray faction, indicating the trust placed in him.
This strategic shift orchestrated by Shinde is being perceived as a tactical move to outmaneuver the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) coalition ahead of the council elections. Ahir’s defection follows the recent success of Operation Tiger, where six rebel Shiv Sena MPs joined Shinde’s faction, hinting at further defections in the future. Shinde emphasized the legality and success of Operation Tiger, affirming that all necessary procedures were duly followed.
