Safdarjung Hospital issued a recent medical update on activist Sonam Wangchuk’s health, revealing signs of dehydration, compensated acidosis, low serum potassium, blood sugar at 78 mg/dl, and increasing urinary ketones. Despite medical recommendations, Wangchuk has declined intravenous fluids, oral rehydration, and medication. Upon admission, he was conscious with stable vital signs, although tests indicated dehydration, compensated acidosis, decreased serum potassium, and rising urinary ketones.
Nitin Dighe, part of the doctors’ team at Jantar Mantar, expressed surprise at Wangchuk’s hospital transfer without prior information. He mentioned that despite monitoring Wangchuk’s health for 20 days, their medical team was not allowed to meet him at the hospital. Wangchuk’s wife conveyed concerns about his treatment transparency and urged for a swift discharge to a family-chosen medical facility.
Wangchuk, who had been on a hunger strike for 21 days, was moved to the hospital following a decline in his health. The shift was in compliance with the Delhi High Court’s directives and medical advice. The protest at Jantar Mantar, led by the CJP since June 6, demands the resignation of Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan over the NEET paper leak. Wangchuk, an innovator and activist, joined the protest on June 28 with an indefinite hunger strike.
