The upcoming Consumer Price Index (CPI) based on the new 2024 base year is expected to see a slight rise of 20-30 bps, as per a report by SBI Research. This new CPI may show lower figures by 20-30 bps during periods of elevated food inflation.
A government-appointed expert group aimed to enhance CPI accuracy by reflecting evolving household consumption patterns and global best practices. The initial CPI series with the 2024 base year will debut on February 12, incorporating data from January 2025 onwards and January 2026 inflation figures.
The revised CPI calculations indicate a marginal increase of 20-30 bps overall, with adjustments for higher food inflation months leading to a decrease of 20-30 bps, as highlighted in the report.
