SC Freiburg made history by securing a spot in the Europa League final for the first time after defeating Sporting Braga 3-1 in the semifinal’s second leg. The victory overturned a first-leg deficit of 2-1, propelling them to a 4-3 aggregate win and setting up a clash with Aston Villa in Istanbul.
The turning point came early in the match when Braga’s Mario Dorgeles received a red card in the sixth minute, reducing them to 10 men. Freiburg capitalized on this advantage, with Lukas Kubler scoring in the 18th minute to level the tie.
Continuing their dominance, Freiburg took the lead before halftime with Johan Manzambi’s goal in the 41st minute. Despite Braga’s efforts, including hitting the post, Freiburg maintained control in the second half, sealing their victory with Kubler’s second goal in the 72nd minute.
Freiburg’s aggregate lead was preserved by goalkeeper Noah Atubolu, who made crucial saves late in the game. The team’s historic journey will culminate in a final showdown against Aston Villa on May 20 at Tupras Stadion in Istanbul.
