Several school students in Bihar’s Muzaffarpur collapsed inside their classroom after a gas pipeline near the school was damaged during drainage construction work. Reports indicate that seven students fainted due to toxic gas from the pipeline, prompting their immediate transfer to a nearby hospital where they are now in stable condition.
The incident occurred on Muzaffarpur-Pusa Road near Rahua village (Musahari block) during the construction of a large drain by Bihar Urban Infrastructure Development Corporation (BUDCO). The gas pipeline was severed by a JCB machine during excavation, causing a gas leak accompanied by a loud noise that led to panic in the area.
The gas cloud spread to the school, located about 100 meters away, where classes were in session. Many students were exposed to the gas, with seven losing consciousness. Local residents quickly took the affected students to Musahari Primary Health Centre for immediate medical attention.
Five of the girls were later transferred to Sri Krishna Singh Medical College after initial treatment at the health center. Doctors at Musahari PHC mentioned that immediate treatment was provided to all affected students. While two girls showed improvement and continued treatment at the center, the remaining five were transported to the medical college by ambulance.
As the students receive care, police teams, technicians, and Indian Oil officials rushed to the scene to contain the gas leak and prevent further harm. A local resident named Neeraj Kumar Mishra attributed the incident to the negligence of BUDCO officials and workers involved in the excavation that led to the pipeline damage.
