Senate Democrats are increasing pressure on President Donald Trump regarding the conflict with Iran. They plan to hold repeated votes to end what they describe as an “illegal war of choice.” Senate Minority Leader Charles Schumer stated that Democrats will persist in forcing these votes weekly, criticizing Republicans for supporting the president’s actions. Democratic senators, including Tammy Baldwin, expressed concerns about the war’s negative impact, citing casualties and escalating costs.
Senator Tammy Duckworth criticized President Trump for lacking a clear strategy in the conflict. She highlighted the absence of a defined end state in what she referred to as a “war of choice.” Additionally, she raised objections to a potential military blockade in the Strait of Hormuz, labeling it as dangerous and lacking justification. Senator Andy Kim voiced transparency concerns, noting his unsuccessful attempt to obtain a Pentagon briefing.
On the other side, Republicans defended the administration’s military efforts, with Senate Majority Leader John Thune praising the success of securing the Strait of Hormuz. Thune emphasized ongoing efforts to facilitate traffic in the region and work towards de-escalation. The political divide extended to domestic issues, such as funding for the Department of Homeland Security, with Schumer accusing Republicans of prolonging a shutdown to evade accountability, while Thune criticized Democrats for impeding funding processes.
Amidst the disagreements, Democrats affirmed their commitment to pushing for war powers resolutions through continued votes. Senator Tammy Baldwin stressed the importance of Congress acting as a check on the president’s decisions, emphasizing the need for accountability in the ongoing conflict.
