In a blow to the Assam Congress unit before the end of election campaigning, senior leader Surya Kanta Sarkar resigned from the party on the same day as a rally by AICC President Mallikarjun Kharge in Cachar district. Sarkar, who contested the 2024 Lok Sabha elections from Silchar on a Congress ticket, cited dissatisfaction with the party’s internal functioning and leadership as reasons for his resignation. In his resignation letter to the Congress President, Sarkar expressed disappointment over unaddressed organizational issues despite his dedication and commitment.
Sarkar highlighted a lack of accountability among certain party office bearers and suggested possible bias based on his community background. He criticized the functioning of the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC), alleging that appointments and decisions in the Barak Valley were influenced by factors other than merit. Sarkar emphasized that the selection process for committees and electoral recommendations did not always recognize the efforts of genuine party workers.
Amidst Kharge’s rally in Borkhola, Sarkar’s resignation has raised eyebrows in political circles, seen as an untimely setback for the Congress as campaigning in Assam nears its conclusion. Despite leaving the party, Sarkar expressed gratitude to his supporters and voters, acknowledging their trust and encouragement as his mainstay. He affirmed his ongoing dedication to public service despite parting ways with the Congress.
