Senior Congress leader and former Union Finance Minister, P. Chidambaram, recently held discussions with Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and TVK President C. Joseph Vijay at the State Secretariat. This meeting has sparked fresh political speculation regarding the upcoming Rajya Sabha bye-election in the state. The Election Commission of India announced the bye-election to fill a vacant Rajya Sabha seat, which arose after former AIADMK Rajya Sabha member C. Ve. Shanmugam resigned following his election to the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly.
Political sources suggest that the Congress is eager to secure the vacant seat and is actively seeking the support of the ruling TVK-led alliance. With five MLAs in the Tamil Nadu Assembly, the Congress had backed the TVK government post-Assembly elections and remains a significant ally of the ruling coalition. Chidambaram, representing the Congress high command, reportedly shared the party’s stance during the discussion with CM Vijay.
The ruling TVK holds a strong numerical advantage with 107 MLAs in the Assembly and support from its alliance partners, positioning the party to play a pivotal role in determining the Rajya Sabha member from the State. The Congress sees this vacant seat as an opportunity to enhance its parliamentary representation and is optimistic about receiving backing from the ruling alliance. However, the official candidate from the Congress is yet to be announced, pending detailed consultations between CM Vijay, senior TVK leaders, and alliance partners.
The upcoming bypoll has generated significant interest within political circles, with deliberations intensifying on whether the TVK will nominate its candidate or support a contender from its allied parties, including the Congress.
