Senior Congress leader P. Chidambaram and Congress MP Karti Chidambaram have advised the DMK to uphold its resistance against the proposed Delimitation Bill. They cautioned that any shift in the DMK’s stance would be seen as a betrayal of its core principles.
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is reportedly gearing up to reintroduce the constitutional amendment on parliamentary delimitation during the upcoming Monsoon Session of Parliament, commencing on July 20. The previous attempt to pass this legislation in April 2026 did not succeed.
Karti Chidambaram, speaking in Sivaganga, emphasized the importance of the DMK maintaining its consistent stand on the Bill. He expressed confidence that the party would continue to oppose the legislation if it resurfaces in Parliament. Additionally, he suggested that the performance of the newly elected Tamil Nadu government should be evaluated after the presentation of its first full Budget.
Addressing the issue of custodial deaths, Karti Chidambaram highlighted the need for systemic reforms within the policing framework to prevent such incidents in the future. He stressed the necessity of a cultural shift within institutions to address this challenge effectively. Moreover, he underscored the importance of promptly addressing allegations of corruption against ministers and legislators through proper procedures.
P. Chidambaram, earlier this week, cautioned against supporting the Delimitation Bill, emphasizing that it would compromise one’s moral values. Reports indicate that the BJP is seeking backing from regional parties like the DMK and Sharad Pawar’s Nationalist Congress Party to ensure the Bill’s passage if reintroduced. Both parties are expected to stand firm in their opposition when the issue is brought back to Parliament.
