A Seoul court has acquitted former South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol of perjury allegations related to false testimony during a former Prime Minister’s trial. The court found it challenging to deem Yoon’s testimony as contradictory to his own memory, suggesting he might have intended to convene a Cabinet meeting regardless of the Prime Minister’s suggestion. Special counsel had sought a two-year prison term for Yoon over the perjury charge.
Yoon faced accusations of misleading statements during the trial of the former Prime Minister, where he was questioned about the Cabinet meeting’s timing in relation to declaring martial law. The special counsel team had indicted Yoon in December on perjury charges, contending that his initial stance on the Cabinet meeting changed following the Prime Minister’s proposal. Yoon, currently in custody since July, is involved in multiple trials, including a life imprisonment sentence for a failed martial law attempt.
