Seoul’s climate minister announced plans to construct two new nuclear reactors by 2038 to meet the country’s growing demand for clean energy. The decision, part of the 12th basic plan for electricity supply and demand, aims to reduce carbon emissions and shift towards renewable energy and nuclear power. Public support for the plan is evident, with 80% of respondents in favor of nuclear power and 60% supporting the construction initiative.
The government will follow through with the construction of the reactors between 2037-2038, as outlined in the previous administration’s 11th basic plan. The Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power Co. (KHNP) will soon initiate the selection process for host cities or towns for the new reactors by 2027. The plan includes obtaining approval from the nuclear safety watchdog by 2031 to ensure timely completion.
In response to climate change, the focus is on reducing coal and liquefied natural gas power generation to achieve carbon emission reductions. The upcoming 12th power supply plan will address the rising electricity demand driven by the growth of the artificial intelligence sector and the expansion of electric vehicles. Additionally, the plan will incorporate an energy mix policy to support South Korea’s goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2050.
