Close on the heels of maternal deaths in Kota, a serious medical issue has emerged at PBM Hospital in Bikaner. Five women developed severe complications, including kidney failure, after giving birth. The affected women faced health deterioration days after delivery, raising concerns among hospital authorities and the state government.
Rajasthan Health Minister Gajendra Singh Khimsar held a high-level meeting to address the situation. He emphasized that the Bikaner incident should not be linked to the Kota case, highlighting the distinct nature of the two events. The affected women at Bikaner experienced complications over different periods, involving both Caesarean and normal deliveries.
Khimsar acknowledged the need to strengthen infection-control systems and hospital monitoring mechanisms. The government is considering engaging third-party agencies for regular hospital inspections. Five women, who fell critically ill 10 to 15 days post-delivery, are currently in the ICU undergoing dialysis. One woman remains in critical condition on a ventilator.
Hospital officials reported complications such as urinary retention, infections, low platelet counts, and kidney failure among the affected women. A team of specialists is monitoring and treating the patients. An inquiry is underway to investigate the causes behind the complications, with findings to be shared with the state government upon completion.
