Activist Sharjeel Imam, a key figure in the alleged conspiracy behind the 2020 North-East Delhi riots, is preparing to surrender at Tihar Jail today as his 10-day interim bail expires. Imam, who hails from Kako in Bihar, is expected to reach Delhi by evening to comply with the court’s order. His brother, Mujammil Imam, expressed sadness over the end of the bail period but hoped for his quick return after surrendering.
Imam was granted bail to attend his brother’s wedding and care for his ailing mother, with the court imposing strict conditions like avoiding media interactions and social media use. He had cited family responsibilities as the reason for seeking bail, being the sole sibling managing the wedding arrangements and supporting his family during challenging times. Imam has been in custody for over five years and is implicated in the larger conspiracy related to the 2020 Delhi riots.
The violence during the riots, which occurred amid protests against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, resulted in 53 deaths and over 700 injuries. Delhi Police have accused Imam of involvement in mobilization and radicalization activities that disrupted essential services through blockades on major roads. His surrender signifies the conclusion of a brief period of family reunion amid ongoing legal proceedings in the case.
