Sharmistha Mukherjee, daughter of former President Pranab Mukherjee, shared her father’s views on the 2014 Lok Sabha election, calling it a pivotal moment in Indian politics. She highlighted Narendra Modi’s historic win as the country’s first directly elected Prime Minister. Mukherjee emphasized that Modi’s leadership marked a significant shift in India’s political landscape, with voters decisively choosing him akin to a presidential election.

Sharmistha Mukherjee also pointed out the unique nature of the 2014 election compared to past instances where Prime Ministers were chosen by senior politicians. She recalled her father’s discussions with Modi post-election, emphasizing the significance of Modi being the declared prime ministerial candidate. The massive mandate received by the BJP was seen not just as a victory for the party but as a direct endorsement of Modi as India’s Prime Minister.

Discussing Modi’s political journey, Mukherjee noted his transition from being a Chief Minister to the Prime Minister in 2014. She highlighted the emotional significance of Modi’s parliamentary debut and how it resonated with the Indian populace. Additionally, she mentioned the BJP’s multifaceted approach to electoral success, attributing it to a combination of organizational strength, strategic outreach, and adaptability.

Mukherjee underscored Modi’s role as a key asset for the BJP, emphasizing his image as a self-made leader devoid of dynastic influences. She shared anecdotes from West Bengal, where voters associated their support for the BJP with Modi personally. Despite differing opinions on policies, Mukherjee acknowledged Modi’s strong connection with the electorate and his enduring popularity.

Concluding her reflections, Sharmistha Mukherjee acknowledged the polarizing nature of Modi’s governance but recognized his charisma and influence on Indian politics. She expressed hope for Modi to fulfill the expectations of the electorate and steer the nation towards progress.
