Congress MP Shashi Tharoor reassured his well-being after an incident in Kerala’s Malappuram district where his convoy was obstructed and a security team member was attacked. Tharoor expressed gratitude for the concern shown by supporters and confirmed that he was unharmed. The incident occurred near the Chellithode bridge at Thiruvali in Wandoor around 7.30 pm as Tharoor was en route to an election campaign event.
Police reported that Tharoor’s convoy was halted near the bridge while he was on his way to support Congress leader A.P. Anilkumar’s campaign. A video from the scene depicted Tharoor seated in his vehicle’s front seat as a group of men surrounded the area, some of whom were chanting slogans. Following a complaint from Tharoor’s security personnel, Wandoor police registered a case, detained suspects, and seized two vehicles associated with the incident.
Tharoor, aged 70, acknowledged the incident in a statement on Saturday morning. A case was filed at Wandoor Police Station based on the complaint from Tharoor’s security personnel, Ratheesh K.P. One individual has been apprehended so far, with ongoing investigations. Kerala is preparing for voting on April 9 in a single phase, with the Assembly’s vote count scheduled for May 4. The state has about 2.70 crore electors, comprising male, female, and third-gender voters.
The upcoming elections hold significance for the Left Democratic Front (LDF) led by Pinarayi Vijayan, as Kerala is presently the only state in India under Left governance. Kerala is known for its political shifts between the LDF and the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF), with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) emerging as a notable contender, gaining substantial vote share in recent polls.
