Title contenders Shillong Lajong FC are set to clash with Rajasthan United FC in a pivotal Championship Phase match of the Indian Football League (IFL) 2025-26 at the SSA Stadium in Shillong on Friday. With just two rounds left in the Championship Phase, Diamond Harbour FC leads the standings with 28 points, followed closely by Shillong and Sreenidi Deccan FC at 22 points each, while Rajasthan sits fourth with 17 points.
For Shillong, the scenario is clear: they must secure a victory against Rajasthan to stay in the title race. Anything less than a win would severely dent their chances. A win would propel Shillong to 25 points before a crucial final-day encounter against Diamond Harbour, where they would also need Dempo SC to defeat the current leaders.
Shillong’s route to the title is straightforward: defeat Rajasthan United, hope for a Dempo victory over Diamond Harbour, and then emerge victorious in their final-day showdown. Shillong’s head coach, Birendra Thapa, emphasized the importance of the upcoming match, stating that a win would keep their hopes alive, while anything less would diminish their chances significantly.
Rajasthan, although out of the title race with a maximum possible tally of 23 points, can still influence the outcome. A win over Shillong would all but end the latter’s challenge, while even a draw would leave Shillong with minimal room for error in the final round. Despite recent setbacks, Rajasthan remains focused on finishing the season strongly, with assistant coach Vikas Rawat highlighting their determination to approach each match with full commitment.
