Shinsegae I&C, the IT division of retail giant Shinsegae Group, disclosed a breach compromising personal data of around 80,000 employees and subcontractors. The leaked information includes corporate ID numbers, names, departments, and IP addresses of personnel, with no impact on customer data. The breach, detected recently, prompted an immediate response from Shinsegae, initiating investigations and security measures.
The breach, attributed to a malware infection, remains under investigation to determine the exact cause. Shinsegae emphasized that no customer data was affected by the incident. Shinsegae, a prominent South Korean retailer with various business operations, swiftly reported the breach to the Korea Internet & Security Agency upon discovery. The company has undertaken urgent measures to address the breach and secure its systems.
Coupang, a leading e-commerce player, also faced a data security incident involving nearly 3,000 customers. The company successfully retrieved the leaked data and confirmed that no information had been shared externally. Coupang identified a former employee as the perpetrator, who confessed to accessing basic customer details using stolen security keys. While data from millions of accounts was accessed, only a fraction was retained and subsequently deleted by the individual.
A joint public-private task force was established by the government to probe the Coupang data breach affecting a substantial user base. The investigation aims to uncover the circumstances surrounding the breach and ensure enhanced data protection measures in the future. Both Shinsegae and Coupang have taken proactive steps to address the breaches and safeguard their systems against potential cyber threats.
