The Shiv Sena criticized the ruling BJP-led alliance in Maharashtra, particularly the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), for its failures during the initial monsoon showers. In a strongly worded editorial in ‘Saamana’, the party accused the BMC of lacking accountability and criticized its handling of a recent tragedy in Chembur.
On June 30, a tragic incident in Chembur where a tree fell on a school bus, resulting in the death of an 11-year-old child and injuries to other children, led to public outcry. The BMC’s internal inquiry committee’s report, which absolved the relevant departments and recommended a nominal fine on the contractor, faced backlash from the opposition for its perceived bias.
The editorial highlighted concerns about the probe’s integrity, pointing out conflicts of interest and a predetermined outcome. It criticized the BMC for failing to address the root causes of tree collapses, despite expert opinions linking them to faulty concreting practices around tree roots.
The Thackeray camp questioned the leadership’s response, accusing them of deflecting blame and resorting to theatrics instead of taking decisive action. It raised doubts about the sincerity of the BMC’s intentions and criticized the broader leadership for what it perceived as a culture of deception and lack of accountability.
