Shiv Sena’s Aaditya Thackeray, a leader and MLA, has written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi requesting a review of the government’s mandatory ethanol-blended petrol policy. Thackeray emphasized the importance of consumer choice and proposed the reintroduction of 100% pure petrol alongside blended fuel options. He highlighted concerns raised by citizens regarding the negative impact of high ethanol blends on vehicle performance and fuel efficiency, particularly for vehicles not designed for such blends.
Thackeray pointed out that many vehicle owners are experiencing lower mileage and performance issues due to increased ethanol blending, leading to additional financial burdens. He also raised questions about the ecological implications of India’s heavy reliance on sugarcane cultivation for ethanol production, especially considering the water-intensive nature of sugarcane farming. Thackeray urged the government to address these concerns transparently and consider a more flexible approach similar to international markets, where consumers can choose between pure petrol and ethanol-blended options based on their vehicle compatibility.
In his letter to the Prime Minister, Thackeray proposed a dual-fuel system at petrol stations to cater to different vehicle requirements and consumer preferences. He stressed that providing options would protect consumer rights, prevent damage to existing vehicles, and enhance public trust in sustainable policies. Thackeray’s initiative comes amidst the ongoing discussions surrounding India’s Ethanol Blending Programme, which recently mandated a nationwide rollout of E20 fuel, comprising 20% ethanol and 80% petrol. Despite the government’s view of E20 as a strategic move for energy independence and cost savings, challenges have emerged due to logistical constraints and opposition from various stakeholders.
