Shiv Sena (UBT) MP, Priyanka Chaturvedi, highlighted the need for thorough consultation with all stakeholders and communities before implementing a Uniform Civil Code (UCC). She stressed the importance of inclusivity in making significant legal changes to ensure every section of society is considered. Chaturvedi’s comments followed the Supreme Court’s endorsement of a “one nation, one law” concept, advocating for a UCC to address gender discrimination in various personal and customary laws.
Chaturvedi expressed that while the objective of a uniform legal framework is equality, the process of enacting such a law should be inclusive and carefully managed. She emphasized the necessity of consulting various stakeholders and ensuring societal consensus to prevent polarization. The MP underlined the significance of transparency and extensive discussions by the government before introducing any major policy like the UCC.
Regarding Union Minister Piyush Goyal’s statements on the India–US trade deal and Russian oil imports, Chaturvedi raised concerns and called for clarity from the government. She questioned whether India had made commitments to the US regarding Russian oil purchases and criticized the lack of clear information on the matter. Chaturvedi also criticized the functioning of institutions like the Election Commission, alleging bias towards the ruling party and removal of Opposition supporters from electoral rolls.
