Shiv Sena MP Milind Deora has backed the Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) efforts to enforce food safety regulations and enhance public health standards. Deora emphasized the need for a transparent digital platform to monitor hygiene and compliance levels, citing alarming statistics from the World Health Organisation (WHO) on global foodborne illnesses and deaths.
Deora praised the FDA’s recent actions, including surprise inspections, license suspensions for severe hygiene breaches, mandatory allergen disclosures, and crackdowns on non-compliant blood banks. He stressed that while enforcement is crucial, the state should focus on establishing a transparent and tech-driven regulatory system to set a national example in food safety monitoring.
The MP proposed making compliance records and inspection data publicly available online and suggested creating a centralized digital dashboard for real-time safety ratings of establishments. Deora believes such transparency would empower consumers and motivate businesses to uphold higher hygiene and safety standards, advocating for a structured mechanism for corrective actions and prompt license reinstatements post-inspections.
Deora emphasized the importance of ensuring businesses operate safely and responsibly while maintaining a balance between public safety and economic viability. His statements coincide with the FDA’s recent actions against non-compliant establishments, sparking discussions on institutional accountability in Maharashtra’s hospitality and healthcare sectors.
Commissioner Tukaram Mundhe’s proactive approach since assuming office in May 2026 has led to a rigorous enforcement campaign by the FDA across Maharashtra. The crackdown has resulted in numerous FIRs, arrests, and closures of establishments for hygiene violations and operating without valid licenses, signaling a significant push for food and public health safety in the state.
