India’s ODI captain, Shubman Gill, expressed his enthusiasm about playing alongside the legendary figures, Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, in the upcoming three-match ODI series against New Zealand. The first match is set to take place at the BCA Stadium (Kotambi) in Vadodara, with both Kohli and Rohit returning to the Indian team, and Gill resuming his captaincy after missing the previous series against South Africa.
Gill highlighted the immense value of having players like Rohit and Kohli in the team, referring to Rohit as one of the greatest openers in ODIs and Virat Kohli as one of the best ODI batsmen ever. He emphasized that their experience and ability to handle tough situations provide invaluable insights for any captain, making the team dynamics extremely positive.
Both Rohit and Kohli showcased their form by scoring centuries in recent Vijay Hazare Trophy matches for Mumbai and Delhi, respectively. Kohli’s century against Andhra Pradesh also earned him the distinction of becoming the fastest player to reach 16,000 List A runs, positioning him just two centuries away from matching Sachin Tendulkar’s record of 60 List A hundreds.
Gill further praised the team environment fostered by the presence of Kohli and Rohit, noting their continuous efforts to propel Indian cricket forward. He commended their stellar performances in the last series and emphasized the positive atmosphere within the team, attributing it to the influence of these seasoned players. The ODI series will progress to Rajkot for the second game at the Niranjan Shah Stadium before concluding on January 18 at the Holkar Stadium in Indore.
