Six individuals have been apprehended regarding the assault and harassment of Trinamool Congress MP Abhishek Banerjee in Sonarpur, West Bengal. Banerjee encountered hostility while visiting the family of a deceased party worker, facing public outrage and physical threats along the way. Despite police security, he was heckled and targeted by protesters during the incident.
Following the episode, concerns arose about the adequacy of police protection. The Sonarpur police station conducted a search operation in the vicinity overnight and analyzed video evidence of the attack. The arrested individuals, identified from the footage, are locals who were present during the assault. Police are currently interrogating them to ascertain any additional accomplices.
Abhishek Banerjee, under police escort, sought medical attention at two private hospitals in Kolkata but was advised against admission after initial assessments. Former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee accompanied him during these visits. Criticizing the BJP government, Mamata Banerjee stated that Banerjee’s treatment would be managed at home, with provisions for necessary medical support, including potential transfer to Hyderabad if required.
