The by-election for Gujarat’s Umreth Assembly seat will witness a six-cornered competition following the closure of the nomination withdrawal deadline. Six candidates are vying for the constituency, including representatives from the Congress, BJP, Bharatiya National Janta Dal, and three Independents. The contest is scheduled for April 23, with the vote count slated for May 4.
The official notification for the bypoll was issued on March 30, with nominations accepted until April 6. After scrutiny and withdrawals, Bhrugurajsinh Chauhan, Harshad Parmar, Maulik Shah, and three Independents emerged as the final contenders. The constituency, part of the Anand district, is one of Gujarat’s 182 Assembly segments and falls under the Anand Lok Sabha constituency.
The by-election was necessitated by the demise of BJP MLA Govind Parmar, who previously represented the Umreth constituency. Polling will be conducted using electronic voting machines, with election authorities ensuring the election’s smooth functioning. Over the years, the seat has been a battleground between the BJP and Congress, reflecting changing electoral dynamics.
