The impact of solar energy in remote and tribal areas of Tripura has been acknowledged nationally, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi praising the state’s progress on his ‘Mann Ki Baat’ radio show. Solar mini-grids are now providing reliable electricity to underserved tribal communities in the Northeast, particularly benefiting villages of the Reang tribal community in Tripura. This transformation has improved daily life by enabling children to study after dark, enhancing mobile connectivity, and boosting social and economic activities.
Tripura’s Power Minister, Ratan Lal Nath, highlighted the positive changes brought by solar microgrids in remote tribal areas, with Karnaram Para in Khowai district serving as a model for this transition. Over 12,000 families in 347 remote locations in Tripura have received free electricity through solar mini-grids, while nearly 2,800 households have installed rooftop solar panels under the PMSGMBY scheme. Solar-powered irrigation pumps have also benefited around 8,000 farming families, aiding in the irrigation of approximately 40,000 kani of land.
The government initiatives PM DevINE and PM-JANMAN have further extended electricity access to homes in Tripura, reaching thousands of households in various localities. Minister Nath emphasized that solar energy is not just about lighting homes but also about reshaping aspirations and livelihoods in the region. He expressed gratitude to PM Modi for acknowledging Tripura’s advancements, marking it as a significant milestone towards self-reliance and sustainable development. This transition signifies a move towards a brighter, solar-powered future for Tripura.
