The Telangana Legislative Assembly unanimously approved a Bill on Sunday to cut 15% of employees’ salaries if they neglect their parents. This new law, the Telangana Employees Accountability and Monitoring of Parental Support Bill, 2026, allows for a deduction of up to 15% or Rs 10,000 from the gross salary of employees who fail to care for their parents. The deducted amount will be directly paid to the parents.

The scope of this Bill extends beyond government workers to include private sector employees and public officials like MLAs, MLCs, corporators, councillors, and sarpanches. The state government highlighted a rise in cases of elderly parent neglect and emphasized the need for measures to reinforce family responsibility in a changing socio-economic environment.

Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy emphasized the significance of this Bill in safeguarding elderly parents and promoting family values. He stressed the importance of respecting human bonds and emotional connections, urging society to shun those who do not fulfill their parental duties. The Chief Minister also mentioned the Maintenance and Welfare of Parents and Senior Citizens Act, 2007, brought by the Centre to ensure children care for their parents, but noted that neglect persisted.
