Soorma Hockey Club clinched their debut win in the Men’s Hockey India League (HIL) 2026 by defeating HIL Governing Council (GC) with a score of 3-1 at the Marang Gomke Jaipal Singh Munda Astro Turf Hockey Stadium in Ranchi. Captain Harmanpreet Singh netted twice (15′, 38′) while Gurjant Singh added another goal (27′) to seal the victory. On the other side, Kane Russell scored the solitary goal for HIL GC, matching Tom Boon’s 10-goal record as the league’s top scorer. Despite the defeat, HIL GC maintains its position in the top two of the points table.
Soorma’s dominance was evident early on as they earned a penalty corner in the first quarter, expertly converted by Harmanpreet Singh. Despite HIL GC’s attempts to retaliate in the following quarter, including efforts by captain Hardik Singh, they failed to find the net. Gurjant Singh’s remarkable goal in the 27th minute extended Soorma’s lead, putting HIL GC under pressure.
The game took a turn when Kane Russell received a green card in the 30th minute, leaving HIL GC with 10 players at the start of the third quarter. Harmanpreet Singh capitalized on this advantage, converting another penalty corner in the 38th minute to extend Soorma’s lead to 3-0. Although Russell managed to score for HIL GC in the 44th minute, it was insufficient to match Soorma’s performance. Despite some late chances, Soorma maintained control, registering 27 circle penetrations and seven shots on goal compared to HIL GC’s 19 circle entries and four shots on goal.
Gurjant Singh, named Player of the Match, expressed satisfaction with the team’s victory, emphasizing the importance of the win and the need to continue the winning momentum in upcoming matches.
