South Africa managed to equalize against Czechia in a Group A match at Atlanta Stadium, securing their first point in the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Teboho Mokoena’s 83rd-minute penalty leveled the score after Michal Sadilek had given Czechia an early lead.
Czechia’s coach, Miroslav Koubek, had urged his team for a quick start following their previous loss to South Korea. Responding to his call, Czechia scored the opening goal in the sixth minute through Sadilek, assisted by Adam Hlozek and Alexandr Sojka.
Sadilek’s goal, coming in at five minutes and eight seconds, was the fastest in the World Cup so far, closely followed by Felix Nmecha’s goal for Germany against Curaçao. Despite both teams creating numerous opportunities, the first half ended with Czechia leading 1-0.
In the second half, South Africa’s manager, Hugo Broos, made a tactical substitution bringing in Relebohile Mofokeng, who added flair to the team’s attack. The match took a turn when Pavel Sulc’s handball led to a penalty for South Africa, expertly converted by Mokoena to level the score at 1-1.
With this draw, both South Africa and Czechia now have one point each from two matches in Group A. Mexico and the Republic of Korea lead the table with three points each, with Mexico holding the top spot on goal difference.
South Africa’s coach, Hugo Bross, expressed pride in his team’s performance, emphasizing their style of play and determination. Looking ahead, he acknowledged the challenge of facing the Republic of Korea and stressed the importance of maintaining a positive mindset for future matches.
