Spain secured a spot in the Round of 16 of the FIFA World Cup 2026 by defeating Austria with goals from Mikel Oyarzabal and Pedro Porro. This victory marked Spain’s first success in the knockout stages of the World Cup since their 2010 triumph in South Africa.
In the upcoming Round of 16 match, Spain will face the winners of the Portugal-Croatia game in Dallas on July 7. The game saw early threats from Spain, with Lamine Yamal’s shot in the first minute setting the tone. Despite a disallowed goal, Oyarzabal broke the deadlock after 36 minutes with a well-placed shot.
Spain dominated the first half, coming close to extending their lead through Alex Baena and Yamal. Austria struggled to create chances, with Michael Gregoritsch and Sasa Kalajdzic missing opportunities. Pedro Porro sealed Spain’s victory with a header, adding to Oyarzabal’s second goal from a Cucurella cross.
Unai Simon’s clean sheet marked his fifth consecutive shutout at the World Cup, equaling Walter Zenga’s record for Italy in 1990. Simon also set a new record by going 519 minutes without conceding a goal in World Cup matches, surpassing Zenga’s previous record of 517 minutes.
